Sailboat sharing

"Sharing" is the English word for "shared." Boats, in particular, are ideally suited to a sharing concept. Many boat owners don't use their boats several times a week, but only on certain days of the month or even just during vacation time, similar to a holiday apartment. However, the maintenance costs shouldn't be underestimated, which is why sharing a boat with other people makes sense. It's also not good for sailboats to be used infrequently. The underwater hull develops fouling, and moisture builds up in closed cabins and furled sails. Combustion engines shouldn't sit idle for months at a time, as this significantly increases wear and tear.

You have obtained your recreational boating license and are wondering how you can continue sailing regularly in the future?

At bootfahrenlernen-berlin you can try out a boat for one or more seasons in peace, gaining more practical experience and background knowledge about sailing and boats.

Avoid the mistakes many boat owners make: rushing into an expensive boat that might not fully meet your needs and is rarely used during the season! No matter how often you sail, owning a boat incurs costs for mooring, winter storage, launching, boat trailer, insurance, maintenance, and a significant time commitment for cleaning and preserving the woodwork and paintwork. We take care of all these things for you! This allows you to truly enjoy sailing in your precious free time and save thousands of euros per season on maintenance costs. Since you share the boat with a limited number of other crew members, the expensive hobby of sailing finally becomes affordable.

Sharing sailboats is the modern, flexible alternative to buying a boat. Sharing has the advantage over co-ownership that a service provider is responsible for the maintenance of the sailboat, not individual co-owners who might not receive help from the group, leaving everything to fall on one person and inevitably leading to disputes.

Compared to daily charters, sharing is cheaper and allows for regular use of a sailboat several times a month. After the initial briefing, you become more familiar with the sailboat and get a similar feeling to owning your own. Furthermore, you are not bound by the rental times of a charter company.

If you complete the sailing course for the SBF Binnen at bootfahrenlernen-berlin.de, you will receive a 10% discount on the monthly sharing price in the 1st season (7 months maximum term).

FAQs

How does sailboat sharing work?

  • How do I choose a boat?

You can view the boats and receive advice by appointment.

  • How can I use a boat?

After selecting your boat, you can sign a sharing agreement. You will then receive your login details and detailed training appointments.

  • How can I avoid feeling overwhelmed when I'm working alone?

As a new sharer, you'll receive 3-4 introductory sessions with a sailing instructor included in your monthly fee. During these sessions, you'll receive a thorough demonstration of the boat and practice maneuvers such as docking under power, parking in berths, anchoring, etc. More sessions are available if needed until you feel confident. You can also contact the service provider with any questions while underway.

  • How do I reserve the boat?

There's an online scheduler where you can reserve the boat and see its availability. Reservations can be made well in advance or at short notice. You can even quickly reserve or change your reservation on the go using a smartphone. A maximum of three 24-hour time slots can be reserved in advance to prevent someone from, for example, blocking out every weekend of the month and leaving other users without a chance.

  • At what times can I use the boat?

As a sharer, unlike with a charter, you are not bound by rental times. After the briefing sessions, you can set sail at sunrise or return late in the evening. In summer, it's light in Berlin until 10 pm. You can also spend the night at anchor on the boat. In the dark, we ask for caution and the use of proper lighting!

  • How many times a month can I use the boat?

For a fixed monthly price, you can use the boat regularly. Of course, the other sharers should also have a chance to use it. However, some sharers may not have time on certain weeks, and the boat might only be used by one or two parties. In that case, you could even use it for three or four days at a time. During the week, the boats are often available. Demand is somewhat higher on weekends. Some sharers use it twice a week, others weekly, and some only two or three times a month. Sharing is cheaper than chartering if you use it twice a month. Using it for, say, two weeks at a time for a vacation is not possible, as this would prevent other sharers from using it. The exception would be if the sharers coordinate with each other. Using the boats for three to five days at a time is possible, but this should ideally happen during the week as well. The majority of sharers use the boats for half-day and full-day trips.

  • How many boat sharers use one boat?

A boat is occupied by a maximum of 5-6 sharing parties. Theoretically, this means each party can sail at least one day per week. We try to mix the groups and find at least two sharers who can also sail during the week. This way, everyone gets a chance to sail on weekends as well. Scheduling conflicts are very rare, based on experience.

  • Is the boat available on weekends?

Experience shows that out of five boat sharers, one person is often at work, another on vacation, and yet another at a party. So, it's very rare for three parties to be available on the weekend. Often, it's just one or two people who can easily divide the days between them. Many sharers also do half-day trips of four hours. Especially in summer, one party can go from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the other from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., giving both of them daylight and seven hours of cruising time. Then, four parties can easily use the boat on a weekend.

  • Which driver's license do I need?

In Berlin, you need the Inland Waterways Sailing License. For a boat, you also need the Inland Waterways Motorboat License (SBF Binnen Motor). This is generally helpful as well. These licenses can also be obtained at our driving school.

  • Is the boat insured?

All boats are covered by third-party liability and comprehensive insurance. The deductible is €500.

  • How should I react in case of damage?

Please report any damage immediately. No subsequent sharer wants to find a damaged boat. We will inspect the damage and determine whether it's a major repair or only cosmetic. Failure to report damage may result in termination of your rental agreement.

  • How long does the season last?

The boat can be used during the season, but not in winter (due to storms, water temperature, and ice). The season generally runs from April 15th to November 15th. Monthly payments are only required for this period, whereas owning a boat incurs costs year-round. Depending on the weather, the season may start later or end earlier in the spring. No payment is required for these weeks.

  • How much does the sharing cost?

    1. Boat sharing at a fixed price: Sharing at a fixed monthly price or as a one-time payment in advance at the start of the contract for one season (7 months). Minimum duration: one season = 7 months. (If starting later in the year, the missing months can be completed in the following year.) Monthly payment: One-time payment in advance: Victoire 25 = €350 (x7) €320 (x7) Dufour 24 = €350 (x7) €320 (x7) Carina 20 = €280 (x7) €250 (x7) Neptun 22 = €280 (x7) €250 (x7) H-Boat = €300 (x7) €280 (x7) 2. Weekday boat sharing: Sharing at a reduced fixed monthly price for use during the week, Monday to Friday, excluding weekends. Here, the boats are rarely used by most sharers and can therefore be offered at a lower price for customers with flexible availability during the week. Minimum rental period: one season = 7 months. (If starting later in the year, the missing months can be completed in the following year.) Monthly payment: Victoire 25 = €280 (x7), Dufour 24 = €280 (x7), Carina 20 = €200 (x7), Neptun 22 = €200 (x7), H-Boat = €240 (x7)

  • Does petrol/diesel cost extra?

No, you don't need to refuel the sailboat. We'll take care of that. The cost of diesel/petrol is included in the price. Our engines are very fuel-efficient. However, the sailboats should not be used as motorboats. There are plenty of motorboat rental companies for exciting canal trips. For parties, there are many providers of party rafts in Berlin.

  • Who cleans the boats?

The boats are cleaned by the charterers themselves! If you want to find a clean boat, please leave it that way. Cleaning supplies are provided on board. We carry out a more thorough cleaning once a week. However, we cannot clean after every use. This is the difference compared to a day charter, which is considerably more expensive but also includes more services.

  • What happens if a boat is out of service due to damage?

We try to have boats repaired as quickly as possible. If this is not possible, the sharer will be assigned to another boat until the damage is repaired. If this is not possible, the fee will be refunded proportionally for outages exceeding 14 days.

  • Who takes care of winter storage, etc.?

We take care of mast installation and winter storage. We also carry out repairs.

  • Can I switch to a different boat?

Generally, you can use a different boat after each season. Switching boats during the season is also possible, provided there are still berths available.

  • Can I use multiple boats?

Experience shows that 90% of our customers are initially quite mentally occupied with just one boat, learning how to use and moor it correctly. Once everything is going well and a certain routine has been established, another boat can be used upon request. This costs an additional €30 per month. We are against a shared boat system, as many sailors find it overwhelming and easily become confused when dealing with different boats. This is more suited to very advanced sailors and is, for example, what sailing instructors in driving schools expect. A fleet of identical boats would be better for a shared boat system.

Advantages of sharing

Sailboat sharing offers the following advantages compared to owning your own boat:

  • Predictable monthly fees instead of a four- to six-figure purchase price. You pay for a maximum of seven months for the seasonal period (mid-April to mid-November). No additional costs!
  • No obligation to the boat beyond the contract period in case of lack of time, other hobbies/dreams, boat change, etc. This allows you to try out different boats first. Changing boats during the season is also possible if spaces are available.
  • No additional costs for accessories and spare parts, such as boat equipment (life jackets, fenders, lines, sunshades, fire extinguishers, etc.), engine spare parts, new shrouds, tarpaulins, etc., which can quickly add up to several hundred euros per season.
  • No significant time investment required for cleaning, polishing, repainting, antifouling, engine maintenance, mast lowering, transport to the workshop, and winter storage – we take care of all of this for you! This makes sharing worthwhile for customers who want to spend their precious time sailing, not on boat maintenance. Boat maintenance is considerably more extensive and expensive than car maintenance. If these tasks are neglected, the boats quickly become unsightly and difficult to sell, as the new owner can easily have to invest sums in the four- to five-figure range to catch up on the deferred maintenance.
  • No high annual fixed costs such as berth (1200€ ), winter storage (1000€ ), insurance (300€ ), crane (150€) etc. For a 6-7.5m keelboat, this quickly adds up to 2500€ .
  • No annual maintenance costs. Other costs include engine maintenance and spare parts (€100-500), fuel (€300), sail repairs (€300), and rigging parts (€250). Total approximately €1000, excluding major repairs.
  • No maintenance costs. The underwater paint needs to be renewed every two years. Simply sanding and applying antifouling yourself costs €200. If the primer needs replacing due to waiting too long, this can easily cost €800-1000. Having a professional rebuild the underwater hull, including osmosis repair, seven coats of primer, three coats of antifouling, and labor, easily costs €3000! Boats need new sails every six to fifteen years. A smaller mainsail costs €1000, a headsail €800-1000. A new, custom-fit cover, canopy, or bimini costs €500-2000. A new headsail cover costs €250-300.
  • Owning a keelboat therefore requires annual fixed costs of around €3,500. If it's cheaper, it might be due to finding an affordable mooring, which in Berlin is like winning the lottery. Or perhaps owning land for winter storage. However, this requires a boat trailer, costing €2,500-€3,500. In addition, expect €1,000-€2,000 per year for maintenance, significantly more if there's a backlog of work. Repairs can quickly add up to €1,000 per year. Thus, owning a boat can easily cost €5,000-€6,000 per year, and that doesn't even include the purchase price.
  • These costs can be reduced through co-ownership. However, good communication is essential, and the big question is always: who will do all the work, and will the costs be shared fairly? With a sharing arrangement, all of this is handled by the service provider, eliminating potential points of contention. Furthermore, sharing arrangements don't require a large initial capital investment.

Sailboat sharing offers the following advantages over traditional chartering:

  • You will be familiar with the boat and receive several comprehensive training sessions with a sailing instructor with 18 years of experience, where you can ask questions and practice. Additional sessions are also available free of charge if needed.
  • Only one contract for the season needs to be concluded instead of before each trip, thus enabling more spontaneous boat trips such as after-work trips in good weather.
  • No restrictions on rental times, so trips are possible early in the morning, in the evening and overnight stays.
  • Savings in boat handover and return times.
  • The monthly fee is only slightly more than the price typically charged for a daily charter (€200-350). For regular use, sharing is significantly cheaper than chartering.
